Gardening & Toddlers

I am sure all you parents and grandparents know with gardening season coming your toddlers are going to want to garden right beside you; I think gardening is a great hobby to introduce to your toddlers? The majority of toddlers are interested in doing the same things as the rest of the family, and this even means working in the family garden?

Gardening Benefits For Toddlers

  • Responsibility
  • Pride
  • New Interest
  • Learning New Skills

Nutritional Benefits

I am sure your children fight you with a passion about eating their veggies you put on their dinner plate, you might be surprised to find out many children who grow their own veggies are more motivated to eat them? Many children will at least taste the veggies they have grown in their own garden, I recommend you provide your children with their own special garden so they can receive many of the benefits from gardening?

My nephew was a very picky eater, but I caught him more than once sampling from my garden? My nephew would sneak and sample my strawberries every chance he had, I even seen him sampling my mint herbs I grow to make home brewed teas? There is something special about a child having their own garden, you will find out this will be a great family activity to add this spring?

Gardening Fun For Toddlers

Many toddlers see a garden as a giant science lab to explore, so many children love to spend hours exploring the critters they find in the garden? As a boy I used to go through my garden picking off the bugs from my plants and put them in my special container, I then would release them far away from my garden.  Toddlers will never complain about having the job of picking the bugs off the garden plants, so when you make gardening fun for your toddlers they learn much more and enjoy themselves?

How To Start Seeds

Starting your toddler out small is often your best strategy for them to understand what exactly is going to happen in the garden, so if you start seeds indoors late winter this is your first opportunity to introduce your toddler to gardening? You can start a few seeds in a glass container and some damp paper towels, you just keep the paper towel damp until your seeds begin to sprout? This is a good way to introduce your toddlers to how seeds start to grow, but you should use seeds which germinate quickly so your child doesn’t lose interest? I would recommend bush bean seeds as good seeds to consider introducing your child to how seeds start to grow, but any seeds are good choices it all depends on you?

Graduation Time

Now that your child understands how seeds grow and it takes them time to germinate your child is ready to graduate, I would recommend your next step to introduce your child to container gardening? You just need any type of container to start your container garden, I recommend glass or ceramic containers but people have been successful with other type of containers also?

Start out with a layer of pebbles on the bottom of your container, you will find these pebbles will provide very good drainage for your container garden? Next add some good compost mixed with a high quality potting mix, you should never use gardening soil in a container. Gardening soil is too heavy and often remains damp too long and can cause your plants to rot or develop disease, you can plant your seeds now and keep them watered and wait patiently for them to sprout?

Once your seeds sprout their little heads out of the potting mix your toddler will be so excited, you will realize to your child this is some type of miracle or magic?

Raised Garden Beds

Many children once they get the knack how to grow seeds in a container will drive you crazy for their own garden, I would suggest you purchase a raised garden bed kit for your child’s garden? These kits are just about the right size for a child’s garden, you could also make one yourself home-made but the kits are inexpensive and you might spend more money making your own?

Beware if you decide to make your own raised garden bed never use treated lumber if you are planning on growing food, you could get away with treated lumbar for flowers but you are taking a risk using this type of material to grow food?

The Family Garden

Maybe you have an old fashion in the ground family garden, you could give your child a section of the family garden for their very own? Gardening should be fun for your child especially starting out, so if you give them a section of the family garden allow them to care for it all by themselves? They might decide to make some mud pies in their section of the garden, but hey it’s their garden don’t ruin their fun?

Planting sunflowers is always a good choice for your child’s section of the family garden, and children just seem to love those giant old fashion type of sunflowers more than those smaller versions? The sunflowers will also attract critters for your child to explore, you will find one summer your child will learn more from their garden than several years of science classes in school?

Child-Sized Garden Tools

Adult gardening tools are just too heavy and clumsy for your child’s little hands and body to use properly, you can find children’s garden tool sets reasonably inexpensive and well worth the investment? If you are wondering where you can purchase gardening tools of such small sizes, you can purchase them at the stores below?

  • Zinnia
  • Marigold

  • Sunflower

Thank you for this great article on how to introduce toddlers to gardening. Gardening is one of my own passions and I find it incredibly relaxing and fun. I have introduced gardening to my own children and even gave them a small corner of the garden to work on. We have grown flowers and carrots easily but alas, our efforts at pumpkins have not been successful but we will never give up! Thanks for your great advice on where to get smaller implements as the adult size ones are just too big for toddler hands.

      Thank You Ms Gail,

I really feel gardening is an important part of our lives to be healthy, we need to eat more home-grown produce and less store bought product with chemicals in them. Gardening is a great hobby to start your children into when they are toddlers, you are not only introducing them to a new hobby but you could be giving them a new lifestyle they would not experience other words.

Great post. It is SO true that when people, even toddlers, have worked to create something, they value it more. They will get more satisfaction eating something they have grown themselves, even if it really doesn’t taste that good!

I’m also happy that you recommend tools for these kids that actually work in the garden. They are not just pretending like with a toy lawnmower, they are actually contributing the growing of the plants.
